Trail Prep 2012 - June 30th
« on: May 22, 2012, 01:15:49 PM »
It looks as though we will be safe to mark down June 16th as our FOTHL Trail Prep Day.  This is the day all the local 4x4 clubs that have adopted sections of trails, as well as just good old hard-working volunteers who are not part of any club, come together to get the trails ready for a summer's worth of rolling rubber.

We plan to have 10 more fire rings to install.  It may be an easy year, and it may be harder.  Easier in that those clearing crews who came through late last year cut a lot of trees near the trail.  This may also make it harder, as trees suck up water, and without those trees there may be bigger mud puddles.  Some of those puddles are just fine, but any that overflow into a creek need to be armored with rocks as best we can.

More details to follow as we get closer, but mark your calendar.

The High Lakes trails are still wet enough that just bringing 50 rigs in for the day will make more problems than we can fix during that day.  We'll need to wait two weeks.  Rescheduled for June 30th.

We're still ON for the 30th.  Plenty to do up there this year.  This is a great way to contribute to keeping the High Lakes open.  Some that come will be part of local clubs, and those clubs have designated trail sections they look after.  Those not in any club get to go work on the best trail (my opinion), the 519 to Pipejam, so come on up!  We will meet at Spring Valley Lake at 9 AM, and hopefully get you onto the trail by 9:45 AM.  Just to clarify, there is no breakfast or dinner at the Spring event.  And, there is no reason to return to Spring Valley Lake at the end of the day, so you can go out as far as you want, camp where you like, and maybe even get all the way through Pipejam.

A big thanks to all the clubs and individuals who helped make our opening a success.  The Pair-O-Dice 4wheelers had the big challenge, as Long/Campbell were kind of a mess.  By the end of the day, they had a few extras (the mess makers?) even working to fill in their mess, and asking to help more.  All the clubs were represented, at least in part, and the trails are mostly open.  We did not get down the 519, as all extras went to Campbell Lake.  The good news is that the NorCal crawlers have officially switched their Adopt-A-Trail trail from the Ben Lomond trail, to the 519/Pipejam trail.  I think they will be planning to get up there soon and run it.  If not, and you are running the trail, please just move any blockage, and help yourself to being a quasi-trail crew.

Also, Ben Lomond is not complete, but the main blockage in the burned area is out of the way.  We had around 40 peeps for the day in around 30 rigs.

Go enjoy!
