Tires
« on: March 12, 2007, 07:24:46 PM »
I finally wore out my dearly beloved Mickey Thompson Baja Belted 33 x 12.5 x 15, may they rest in peace in the boneyard.  They served me well for 25 years, though.

I replaced them with some cast-off tires that a friend gave me,  but they were shot about when I got them, and lasted a couple trips.

Biting the bullet I got a set of ProComp XTerrain 35 x 12.5 x 15, and today got them mounted and hanging on the Heep.

Gasp, they are larger !

Here's some pics, before the work starts to make them fit.

Well, Mickey Thompson was murdered, and so were my Baja Belteds.  Still had a fair bit of tread,  but the likes of Morris Lake, Dusy-Ershim, Swamp Lake, Red Lake,  Rubicon, Fordyce and hundreds of other trails thrashed the sidewalls.

Nah, warranty expired...   maybe longer ago than some here have lived   ::)

Good looking tires! Do you mind if I ask what the cost was?

Looks like you are doing to have to do something in the rear so they don't get tore up.

How is the side-side  in front?  With the wider backspaced rims, did it hit the springs?

'Ya, I don't mind...  For the month of March, ProComp, through their authorized dealers, is offering buy 3, get 4.  FREE delivery

I have nearly put new springs on the rear,  should give me an  increase in height,  as the previous 2 1/2 lift was flat.  I don't mind cutting the lower corners if needed, and it looks like I can.  I'll decide that after the springs are all of the way on.

No way they'll hit anything in the front,  unless it is the top of the flat fender or some trees,  way clear, full stops out.

When I get the springs fastened on,  and I'm on the way right now to get new u-bolts, I'll run it up my home-made fake RTI ramp and know more.

I think I might be tempted to put the full stops back in, as the spec on that axle is about 23 degrees turning radius if I remember right.  It will go beyond that, but won't it put a LOT more pressure on the little u-joint in the Dana 25 axle?  I set mine at 23 degrees, and it seems sharp enough to me for that short wheelbase vehicle.

Don't pop the clutch on that RTI ramp!

Now if we just had a real expert, not one that plays one on TV, we might actually know something. :-\
