Inyo National Forest News Release on Scoping Comment Deadline
« on: December 06, 2007, 09:00:51 AM »
- Reminder -
Travel Management/Route Designation Comments Due December 15

The Forest Service would like to remind the public that scoping comments on
the proposed action for the Travel Management - Route Designation process
on the Inyo National Forest are due by December 15.   The proposed action
was released for public review and comment on October 1 of this year.

The Travel Management – Route Designation process is part of a national
effort to define transportation systems on each national forest in the
country.  The goal is to develop a sustainable system of routes that
provide an array of opportunities for access and recreation on national
forest lands, as well as protection for resources by curtailing motorized
cross-country travel.

Scoping comments received at this time will be used to help formulate a
range of alternatives that will be analyzed in an Environmental Impact
Statement (EIS).  Scoping is an ongoing process during the preparation of
an EIS.  It continues throughout the planning process and may involve
meetings, conversations, or written comments from interested members of the
public.  The goal of scoping is to ensure a thorough environmental review
of significant public concerns.

The Travel Management – Route Designation process in the state of
California is operating on a very tight timeframe.  The Draft EIS for the
Inyo National Forest will be available for public review and comment in the
summer of 2008.  The earlier in the process that the public makes their
concerns known, the better the  Forest Service Interdisciplinary Team can
address them in the analysis process.  According to Forest Supervisor Jim
Upchurch, “Comments received later on in the process will  be addressed to
the best of our ability, however the later they are received the more
difficult it is to to integrate them into the analysis.  I encourage the
public to get their input to us by December 15.  If someone thinks of
something later on, they are still encouraged to submit their comments for
consideration in the analysis process.”

Information on the Travel Management – Route Designation process, including
the proposed action and Notice of Intent to Prepare an Environmental Impact
Statement, are available on the Inyo National Forest website at

information and maps please call Marty Hornick at (760) 873-2461, or email
