'86 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer 4x4

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1986 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer 4x4
4cyl 2.5L 5spd transmission
190k

Body in great shape, interior is excellent.
Several new parts!
Clean title, NO smog

So here is the deal...I bought this jeep from a guy off of craigslist who lives in Forest Ranch. In his ad he said that several things were new but it had an oil leak and a bad starter although he had the compression checked and it was good. So, like an idiot I trusted him because he and his wife seemed really nice. I took it home and began to work on it.
I cleaned the engine to locate the oil leak. It was a small crack in the valve cover, so I replaced the cover in addition to the gromets and pcv vavle.
Next I decided to figure out why the jeep was having a hard time starting (the seller told me it needed a new starter in the begining) So, I replaced the starter but it was still acting strange at start up.
So, next I replaced the spark plugs, wire connectors, cap and rotor, and distributor trying to see what was up but still the same.
So, now I replaced the fuel filter, air filter, flushed and replaced the oil, used fuel cleaner and still the same.
I also changed the front brake pads and rotors.
So the $300 jeep has become a $775 jeep

Now fustrated beyond belief I took it to a mechanic who told me that 1cyl was dead, 2cyl at 50, 3 cyl at 90, and 4cyl at 100..that it needed to be taken apart to see if it needs gaskets, valve job, or piston/rings however that is beyond what ($$$) I am willing to put into it and am unable to do that level of work myself.

All it needs is someone with good mechanic skills and I am sure they could get it running for cheaper than the $1000+ quote I recieved. Also someone looking to make an off-roader could do a v6 swap. This jeep would be awesome if someone had the time, tools, and know-how to fix the issue!
Eitherway, I am selling the Jeep for $500 (trying to cut my losses)

I will post pics as soon as I can.

It is not smog exempt.  Sorry, I should have said it has no smog cert. , so it needs to be smogged.
Sorry for any confusion.

thanks

How many miles on the clock?
Stick or auto?
What transfer case?
What rear end?
is it completely stock?
Where is it located?
